RI 64 - 42 Geylang Serai

The 3rd and final game of the Milo Cup 1st round. Due to poor planning on the organizers part, our 1pm match was delayed to 2pm.

The opponents for this game was definitely weaker compared to our first 2 games. Nevertheless, we were still focused on the game as a lost would be totally unacceptable.

Our defense for this game was really poor. It is clear that we need to improve on our sliding because we only their player to single-handedly score a lay up after rebounding the ball. We did not force the opponents to the weaker hand and was never once over playing them on their strong hand.

Furthermore, we need to improve on our rebounding. We need to box-out hard, be aggressive and time the rebound. As a shorter team, we cannot expect to out jump the opponent for the rebound. Therefore, if we want to win any basketball game. All 5 players on the court have to box-out and get the rebound.

Remember when playing defense,
  • No second chance for the opponent.
  • No straight path to the basket for the opponents. Help defense is a must.
Hope to see an improvement in the 2nd round of the Milo Cup Tournament.

RI 45 - 39 Eng Tat Hornets

The most crucial game in the first round of the Milo Cup Tournament. It was a do or die match. Not wanting to be eliminated in the first round of the tournament, we brought our A game.

We started off strong with our full court press. At the end of the quarter, we were leading by 10. Just what we wanted; a strong lead to break the opponents moral.

However, the 2nd quarter paled in comparison to the 1st quarter. Our offense was messy and the shots we took were all forced. In addition, we were not getting the rebounds. On offense, after taking a shot, the opponents got the rebound. However, on defense, after the opponents took a shot, they grabbed their own rebound repeatedly. The opponents probably doubled the number of shots taken compared to us. Moreover, we were making unnecessary fouls, and by the 5th minute mark, we were already in the penalty. Fortunately, our players managed to hold their grounds and we only lost by 2 points in the 2nd quarter.

In the 3rd quarter, the opponents stepped up their game. Their played stifling defense and it was really difficult to get a good shot. On the other end, they were grabbing countless offensive rebounds. Due not only to their aggressiveness but also to the lack of box-outs on our part. The opponents even came close to tie the game with us.

Fortunately in the 4th quarter, the opponents were too concentrated in their individual play and lacked passing. Furthermore they were not getting as many 3 pointers as compared to the 3rd quarter. This was probably because they centre started taking mid range shots. At the closing minutes, we grabbed crucial offensive rebounds and put-backs while the opponents made bad decisions, throwing the game away.

With the win, we would most likely move on to the 2nd round.

Some points to note.
  • Do not make play defense with your hands. Move your feet!
  • Box-out. As a short team, there is no way we can out-jump the opponents.

RI 41 - 59 Paya Lebar CSC

Our first game in the Milo Cup. Definitely not the best start with the disappointing lost.

For those who do not know, Milo Cup has a few uncommon rules:
  • Firstly, zone defense is strictly prohibited.
  • Secondly, teams may not defend beyond the half court line after they score a basket. Meaning that they are only allowed to play a half-court man to man but not a full-court press.
  • Lastly, only 6 players can play in the first and second quarter respectively. Meaning that a player who has played in the first quarter may not play in the second quarter. This rule is not applicable in the second half.
The implementation of the second rule was a real bane to us because we wanted to play a full-court press throughout the entire game. However, even when we were playing our full court press, we were not aggressive enough.

Furthermore, our help defense was extremely slow allowing man passes to be made to the centre.

Lastly, we were too weak on both the offensive and defensive boards. We did not box out, allowing the opponents to stroll to the paint and get the rebounds.

Definitely hope for an improvement in the 2nd and 3rd game or we may just be kicked out in the first round of the Milo Cup Tournament.

RI 32 - 40 United World College

A tightly fought 4th game of the ISIBL Competition. Once again, the opponents were taller than us and our objective for the game was to prevent them from getting offensive rebounds. Although we tried very hard, the opponents still manages to get numerous offensive rebounds. On the bright side though, we played solid full court press and succeed to gain possession on the ball frequently.

Our next game will be against Presbyterian High tomorrow.

RI 32 - 49 International Community School

This was 3rd game of the U19 ISIBL Competition. Once again the opponents was bigger than us. However, the biggest take away from this game was not during the match, but rather before it. As we've never been to this school before, all of us was unfamiliar with its location. In the end, many of us got lost and we only had 5 men to play the first half.

Nevertheless, we definitely should not discouraged by the first 3 losses. There's still 4 more games to win!

RI 30 - 54 Australian International School

The 2nd game of the ISIBL Competition. Most of our starters were out of action either because they were injured or were injured. However, this was not inherently bad because our bench received more playing time to hone their skills.

RI 38 - 87 Overseas Family School

This is the first game of the U19 ISIBL. Although we played our hardest, we still could not defeat the opponents. Definitely a learning opportunity for us.

RI 26 - 42 North Vista

We started off quite well, playing good defense, causing the scores to be very close. We ended the quarter losing narrowly to North Vista by 1 point. We kept up with the tight defense and the score was 13 - 14 at the end of the 2nd Quarter. We were down by 1.

However, in the 3rd quarter, North Vista started to press us and we started to panic. We made a lot of turnovers, allowing North Vista to get many fast breaks. We loss concentration and were trailing behind North Vista at the end of the 3rd Quarter. During the 4th quarter, we made countless unnecessary turnovers, and ended up losing the game with a final score line of 42-26.

RI 28 - 62 Unity

This game was much better then the previous game. We played better both offensively and defensively. However, we got into the game only in the 3rd quarter, resulting in a big score difference. A big problem was still our box out and offensive rebounds. In the first 2 quarters, the transition defense we have been working on was not utilized well. We also were unable to play the plays out properly.

The third quarter was our best quarter. We managed to out score unity in that quarter 19 -13. We managed to play slightly better transition defense. We will to continue working out on our transition defense and use it against North Vista this coming Wednesday.

RI 10 - 42 Dunman Sec

This was the worst match we played throughout the season, and an extremely bad start. We had few offensive and defensive rebounds, consistently allowing the opponents to have a second try. By the end of the 1st Quarter we lost our fighting spirit and our state of mind. We failed to stop their fast breaks, let them drive in easily, and get backdoor cuts. We had little outside shots and drives, we were stuck on the offensive end. This was because the wings always received the ball far away from the 3point line making the game a 4 on 5 match as the wings were not an offensive threat from so far away.
In the fourth quarter we already lost most of our fighting spirits allowing the enemy to push us around in the paint and grab their own rebounds.

RI 46 - 48 Dunman Sec

This was the final chance for us to qualify for the semi-finals. To achieve that, we had to win by more than 10 points. Even though some might have thought that it was a seemingly impossible task, we were confident of achieving it.

Despite having our starting power forward out for the game due to an injured shoulder, our bench stepped up their game and contributed significantly. Our objective for the game was to get the defensive rebounds while preventing the opponents from getting the offensive rebounds, and to run as many fast breaks as possible. Although we were down by 9 points at the end of the first quarter, our spirits were not dampened. We continued to fight, and executed a full court press on them, which proved rather successful.

However, the turning point came at the start of the fourth quarter. At around the 7 minutes mark of that quarter, we hit two consecutive 3 pointers, cutting the lead to 4. This was followed by a well contested mid range jumper which still managed to fall and a foul and 1 under-basket shot. Then, the score was tied 46-46. The opponents had a chance to take the lead but we played excellent half court defense, forcing their forward to take a tough mid range jumper which did not fall. After getting the rebound, our point guard attempted a fast break and got fouled in the process, hence getting to shoot 2 free throws to take the lead, and perhaps the game too.

However, during the time out, the team agreed in unison that we were not contented to just get the win. We wanted to win by ten and move on to the semi finals. In order to do that, we had to force an overtime. Therefore, with 7.8 seconds left on the clock, he intentionally missed the two free throws. Unfortunately, we did not secure the rebound, and allowed a fast break by the opponents. Left without any other choices, we fouled him and prayed that he would miss both the free throws. To our utmost dismay, he made both. Left with 2.4 seconds, there was little that we could do other than to try our luck on a full court shot. It did not fall, and we loss the game 48 to 46.

Despite the lost, our fighting spirit remain high. Given the chance to take the game, we chose not to because we were not satisfied with a win. Perhaps some might consider this as a silly move on our part. However to me, this was the best decision the team has made for the season.

RI 'B' Division 2011
SOUTH ZONE CHAMPIONS! NATIONALS TOP 8!

Tuesday, April 19, 2011

RI 46 - 39 Yishun Secondary

After a disappointing loss yesterday, we were determine to play much better this game. Instead of playing a zone defense, we went back to our usual man to man defense, and it proved rather effective. We managed to secure most of the defensive rebounds and our offense was quite smooth in the first half. This was despite having our starting centre, bryan, out from an ankle injured he suffered yesterday

At the start of the third quarter, a very unfortunate accident occurred; our starting power forward, Chun Cheong, dislocated his shoulder joint while fighting for the offensive rebound. It seem serious enough that paramedics had to be called in. Here's wishing Chun Cheong a speedy recovery.

Back to the game, with the loss of our power forward, we also loss our momentum. On the other hand, the opponents were slowly getting their confidence in their offense. Our 15 points lead at 1 point in the second quarter was cut down to 1 at the end of the third. Nevertheless, we kept our morale high, and managed to get the win.

We still have a day to prepare for Dunman Sec. Hopefully we will be able to defeat them and move on to the semi final, reaching our goal for the season.

RI 41 - 56 Jurong Sec

The first loss of our season... :(

We attempted a different defense and offense against Jurong Sec; going to the 3-2 zone and adding a baseline cut for the wings. The purpose of the 3-2 zone was to prevent their drives by providing lots of help defense. However, there was a few problems when we executed this defense. Firstly, with our starting centre, Bryan, spraining his ankle in the second quarter, our bigs were no longer that big. We allowed their centre, #15, to have his way in the paint; getting countless number of offensive rebounds. Secondly, Jurong manage to knock down a couple of 3 pointers, to our dismay.

Perhaps it was because Jurong was more prepared than us, or perhaps it was because we were just not energetic enough. Nevertheless, our defense was "the worst in the season" (as quoted from Coach Lim), and we did not score a single point in the third quarter.

Hopefully we will still be able to proceed to the semi finals despite this lose. That we can't control. What we can control is to win the next game tomorrow against Yishun Sec by more than 15 points.

RI 37 - 34 Fairfield

This was a close match from the beginning and we only started to pick up the pace in the 2nd quarter. We trailed behind by 1 point at the end of the 1st quarter. At the start of the 2nd quarter, our zone defense started to work out. However, we were just very rushed in this match and failed to listen to the coach's instructions. Luckily there was internal dispute among the opponents which helped us a little. In the last few seconds. the opponents started to foul us intentionally out of desperation. We managed to keep our cool and maintain possession.

This was a rather good match. We definitely have overachieved, but could have pushed harder and get even better results in this South Zone Tournament.

RI 50 - 60 Queensway

This was a really bad match, we were just not in the game throughout the whole match. We also had very low intensity showing that we just were not prepared. We lost mainly due to too many silly mistakes and poor weak side rebound.

Coach prepared us well for this match, but the moment we stepped into the court, we just did not play to what we trained. We failed to deny their key player, had bad weak-side rebound and outlet passes. Every time we caught up, we simply made several silly mistakes and gave the opponent the lead again. It was basically a really disappointing match.

RI 60 - 27 Pierce

This was the last match of Round 2. Our defense was not working out very well throughout this match. We had a 13 point lead in the first quarter and managed to maintain the lead, taking home this match.

Our main goal now is to defeat Queensway this Wednesday and progress to the finals to face off with Catholic High. Although we are quite familiar with Queensway, defeating them will not be an easy task(especially since we lost to them before), they have several skillful players and move the ball fast. We have to play extremely solid defense in order to emerge victorious.

RI 78 - 40 PeiCai

This was the first time we ever scored more than 70 points in any match we had played before. With this victory, we secured a spot in the semi-finals.

We started off the match with a close fight due to our inability to block the cutting lanes and stop the drives. We ended off the 2nd quarter losing 20-22. However in the 3rd quarter we managed to step up the pace and shoot consistently with slightly better defense. Thus, by the start of the 4th quarter we had gained a big lead(44-29). In the 4th quarter we played extremely good offense and scored 34 points in just 10 minutes!

We hope to improve ourselves as we will meet stronger teams like Cat High and Queensway in the semi-finals.

RI 40 - 30 North Vista

This was crucial match of the first round. Even though we won the first two games, this did not guarantee us a place in the second round.

Before the start of the game, we could clearly see the size difference between us. We were clearly the underdog. However, this did not distract us from the task ahead; to full court press them for all four quarters. Like the previous game against New Town, the opponents were exhausted by the third quarter and were clearly less active on the boards and had less fast breaks. However, we too were exhausted and caused our offense to dry up. In fact, we only scored 7 points in the third quarter.

However, we held on to the lead, and by the last 2 minutes of regulation, we were up by 4 points. Sensing a defeat, the opponents changed their strategy and started fouling us intentionally. However, we converted on the 2 free throws, going 6 for 8 at the line. Furthermore, we managed to grab the crucial offensive and defensive rebounds in the last few minutes, sealing the victory for RI.

With this win, we will progress to the Top 8 of the Nationals. Our next game will be on 18 March.

RI 67 - 66 Guangyang

This match was a very close and exhausting match and we only managed to win by a narrow margin. Our intensity was not as high as our previous match and our defense was not very good in the 1st quarter. We failed to deny their key player and had little help side defense, allowing the enemy to cut to the basket easily. We also had way too many fouls(24).

In the 2nd quarter we managed to play slightly better defense and offense. The game was still very close and we trailed behind by 3 points. However we manage to out score them in the 3rd quarter, making the score 41- 41. In the 4th quarter both teams fought hard to win the game but ended up with a tie 56 - 56 leading to overtime(OT).

In OT we managed to maintain our composure and concentration, play out our plays on the offensive end and secure our basket on the defensive end, allowing us to win. We also faced 2 difficulties in this match. No.1 2 of our key players were fouled out. No.2 another 2 of our players were injured.

We hope to win the next two matches and make it to the semi-finals as the top of our group.

RI 46 - 45 New Town Secondary

This was the second game of the Nationals, and we played well. The objective for us this game was to tire our opponents, so as to get easy points in the second half. However, in the first half, we were allowing the opponents to get many offensive rebounds and fast breaks (This due to our poor help defense). On the other hand, we were not getting many fast breaks or offensive rebounds.

Things changed in the second half. Our opponents started to become exhausted, and did not play as good a defense as the first half. We managed to grab a couple of offensive rebounds and fast break, and also stopped their star player from scoring as much. Nevertheless, we were exhausted ourselves, and took quite a few low percentage shots.

The next game against North Vista is a do or die match; either we win them and proceed to the second round, or lose by more than 1 points and be eliminated from the competition. Hence, we have to play even harder than we did today, and get closer to our goal of the top 4.

RI 58 - 48 Fairfield Methodist

This was the first game of the 2nd round and we were up against quite a strong team with big players. We started off strong but as we entered the 2nd quarter some of us lost concentration. We played strong defense except for several leaks where their point guard was able to dribble all the way down. We managed to get back our momentum in the 3rd quarter and maintained the lead. This is probably one of our best games yet and we hope to strive to win the next few games and emerge as top in our group.

RI 52 - 34 Tampines Secondary

(Scoresheet unavailable)

This was the first game of the Nationals. Fortunately, this was the easiest game of the first round.

We outscored the opponent in the first and second quarter with a numerous 3 pointers and managed to collect quite a number of offensive rebounds too. In the third quarter, the opponents tried to make a comeback mainly through the post. He had many running hook shots that he converted. Furthermore, we also had poor help defense, and allowed their wings to cut to the basket from half court. In the fourth quarter, we were exhausted as we had been playing a full court man to man defense for the past 3 quarters, and attempted many low percentage shots. However, the opponents were also tired, as seen from their reduced number of fast breaks. In the end, we managed to outlast the opponent and get the win.

Even though we won this game, we must definitely go back and prepare even harder because we know that the next 2 matches against North Vista and New Town is not going to be easy.

RI 45 - 24 Gan Eng Seng

In this crucial match we managed to win by 21 points to secure a place in the 2nd round of the SZ Tournament. We played solid defense, with good help side and had few fouls. We got a big lead by the 2nd quarter, making us complacent, allowing the opponents to score fast breaks and open shots. They even managed to out score us in the 4th quarter
We hope to try and beat Fairfield Methodist-a strong team, on Friday.

RI 57 - 24 Henderson Secondary

In this match we started off slow and played quite solid defense, stepping up the pace in the second quarter. We cut down on our fouls from 23 during the ACS Barker match to 8 fouls. However, our weak side rebound was not very good and a lot needs to be done in preparation for the crucial GES match.
We hope to win GES and proceed to the 2nd round.

RI 50 - 25 ACS Barker

This was the 2nd game of the season. After our loss to Queensway we started trying to fix our two problems especially our weak side rebound. Despite this big win we could have done better and scored about 60 points if we had not missed easy baskets. During the first quarter we pressed them hard with our full court man defense and managed to get several easy lay-ups. By the end of the 2nd quarter we already managed to maintain quite a huge lead(28-5). We had managed to grab most of our defensive rebounds and quite a few offensive ones too. However another big problem arose during this match, there were simply just too many fouls. We had 23 fouls, most of which were unnecessary. The main problems was everyone was just using "too much hands and too little legs" on defense. This caused ACS to get a lot of chances at the FT line.
Anyway we hope to learn from this and win the next match against Henderson on Friday and the crucial match against Gan Eng Seng following Thursday and be able to proceed to the 2nd round.
1st Quarter--RI 14 ACS 4
2nd Quarter--RI 14 ACS 1
3rd Quarter--RI 14 ACS 8
4th Quarter--RI 8 ACS 12

Queensway Secondary 48 - 30 RI

This was the first game of the first round for South Zone and we had quite a tough pick. This was an important match which we disappointingly lost. We did not really know much about the team, but we were able to pick out their 3 key players (7, 11, 12). We played acceptable defense and started out strong but lost in the end due to 2 fatal mistakes - weak side rebound and stopping of the opponents fast breaks. We lost about 8 points due the the fast breaks and another 16 points due to no weak side rebounds. Queensway simply just shot, picked up their own rebound and put it back in.
We hope to try and fix those two big problems and win ACS barker on Wednesday!

RI 73 - 64 Pei Cai Secondary

This was the semi-final match of the South Zone Basketball Competition.
As we had played against the Pei Cai Sec 3 starters a couple of times last year, we were prepared for them. Coming into the game, we were focused on getting the win. Throughout the game, we were slowly stretching our lead. By the end of the third quarter, we were up by 18 points.
In the fourth quarter, the opponents used a full court press against us. We were quite rushed on certain offence, and turn the ball over. The opponent also started knocking down their shot, with 4 of their 6 3-pointers coming in the fourth quarter. Nevertheless, with our 9 3-pointers in the game, we managed to get the win.
A point to note is that throughout the game, we were always in the penalty, having committed a total of 20 fouls. This is worrying because we allowed the opponents to go to the free throw line on countless occasion, giving them a chance to come back into the game.
Our next game will be on Wednesday against Gan Eng Seng. A team we are quite familiar with, having played about 3 friendly matches with them in the December holidays.
Let’s get the win next Wednesday and become the B’ Div South Zone Champions!

Scoring by quarters:
1st Quarter -- RI 17 Pei Cai 12
2nd Quarter -- RI 20 Pei Cai 12
3rd Quarter -- RI 18 Pei Cai 13
4th Quarter -- RI 18 Pei Cai 27

Comment from Coach
It was a good game. You guys responded well to a resilient Peicai team. When they refused to give up, you responded calmly by making use of every opportunity and hitting clutch shots. Every fight-back was matched with a counter-blow.
A strong mentality will be the key to winning your first B Div South Zone title in many years. Let's go for it!

RI 51 - 31 Catholic High

This was the last game in the second round of the SZ basketball final.

We started off well, getting a couple of offensive rebounds. In the
second quarter, Cat High replace all their starters with their bench.
Even though we outscored then 19 to 2, it could have been more as we
did not look for our posts as often as we should.

In the third quarter, the opponent used a full court press against us.
We managed to break through it but still had a few unnecessary
turnovers.

After a decent 3 quarters, our 4th quarter was a disgrace.like our
previous game,we were overconfident of the imminent win and did not
play our best basketball. We lost the quarter 13 to 10.

We must definitely play good basketball all four quarters because that
is what it takes to win in the nationals. Our next game will be next
Monday against Pei Cai Secondary at CCAB.

Scoring by quarters:

1st Quarter -- RI 10 Cat High 8

2nd Quarter -- RI 19 Cat High 2

3rd Quarter -- RI 12 Cat High 8

4th Quarter -- RI 10 Cat High 13

RI 56-40 Queensway Sec

This was our third game in the second round of SZ B’ Div Bball competition.

We started the game off very strongly, taking a 17-point lead at the end of the first quarter. We did not allow the opponents to run their offense even once by forcing them to dribble with their left hand, their weaker hand.

In the second quarter onwards, the opponents used a full court press on us. Even though we had prepared for this, we still turned the ball over many times. This was probably because after our first quarter blowout on the opponent, we had the winning-mentality and could not focus on the game.

A learning point from this game is that in the nationals, if we want to win a game, we have to focus on playing good basketball for all four quarters.

Scoring by quarters:

1st Quarter -- RI 19 Queensway Sec 2

2nd Quarter -- RI 16 Queensway Sec 14

3rd Quarter -- RI 14 Queensway Sec 12

4th Quarter -- RI 7 Queensway Sec 12
