RI vs New Town

We lost to New Town Secondary 56-51 today. Early on, two of our important players Zheng Feng and Johnny were taken out with ankle sprains and this left limited attacking options for the rest of the game. Nevertheless, we continued fighting and hustling and maintained a lead all the way to the fourth quarter, credit to good shooting by point guard Danny. The lack of options showed in the fourth quarter as New Town was better prepared to guard our point guard and the rest of us were not hitting our shots. New Town punished us for this by overtaking the lead.

Simon fouled out in the last quarter and this further hindered us. We fought back with full court defence after New Town grabbed a ten point lead with a few minutes left, and managed to get back a few baskets and bring it back to within four with a minute to go. Unfortunately, it was not quite enough and we did not take back the lead. Overall, we did put in effort and with the circumstances it was nothing to be ashamed about. However, if we had put in abit more effort over the course of the game, we would have snatched the win, even with nine men.

Draw for second round 9th February. We will be back.

RI vs Pierce

| View Show | Create Your Own

25th January 2007

Raffles showed up with a stellar shooting performance and a highly commendable rebounding game as we beat Pierce Secondary 87-33. The game started off with both teams trading baskets and Pierce looked prepared to stop us in our tracks. As we know, basketball is a team game and the occasional slip up and unawareness of one our players on defense resulted in a frustrating and tough first half as we couldn't pull away from Pierce by more than 10 points. Pierce even saw a glimmer of hope when they sunk a 'hope-for-the-best' shot from half court with 1.67 seconds left in the second quarter, closing the gap to 10 points.

However, we stepped our game up and overwhelmed the Pierce team in the second half. Tenacious defence resulted in several steals. Good shooting by the backcourt, fierce offensive rebounding and second chance baskets also contributed, as we outscored Pierce 50-6 in the second half. We out-hustled them and they ran out of gas in the end.

We managed to rotate the full team and had a good game to prepare ourselves for Newtown next Tuesday. Raffles is technically through to the second round, with the top spot to fight for in our remaining game of the 1st stage. Newtown won't be easy, but if we show up with determination and intensity like today's, we'll be able to match up/overcome any team in Singapore. We won't be looking at the chances of drawing Gan Eng Seng & Catholic High in the second round, instead, we'll be looking to win every game - the way a Championship team would want to play in the National Finals.

Defence wins games. Rebounds win Championships.

RI vs Beatty

23rd January 2007

Improvement from the first game as Raffles beat Beatty Secondary 55-19. Intensity was right from the start, though the inputs were questionable as Raffles couldn't pull away by more than 15 points in the first half. Showing more fight through more intense trapping, going for more offensive boards and converting most of them, Raffles finally pulled the score away slowly but surely.

A need for more determined and strong finishes surfaced after several dubious referee calls robbed Raffles of a handful of free throws. If we want to play a championship game, we would have to step up our finishing and resilience.

Pierce and Newtown will challenge our readiness and will to win, we'll be looking to prove ourselves and play tough basketball.

RI vs ACS Barker

18th January 2007

A very bad game for Raffles today as we eked out a victory over ACS Barker 47-37. The main problem was the lack of intensity, which led to sloppy defending and horrendous rebounding. We did not bring our defence to the game from the start, and this hurt us as ACS managed to get off many shots which should never have been taken. On offence, we were not focused enough to finish on the fast break and on drives.

There was also a lack of tenacity on the offensive rebounds, which handicapped our team as we were already having a bad shooting day.

Overall, it was a poor game which we did not bring our fight to, and we will be looking to turn this around in the next game next Tuesday.
